Motivated by his dedication to promote his degree program, Prince Nico Geolaga established the environmental organization Sustainability Advocates for Climate Change Action (SACCA), with the conviction that environmental action should involve everyone.
Geolaga, a second-year BS Environmental Planning student at Notre Dame of Dadiangas University, began SACCA in 2024 with a simple idea to highlight his program. What started as a casual initiative soon became an organization dedicated to environmental advocacy.
"Environmental action is not something exclusive to environmental groups," Geolaga emphasizes.
Drawing inspiration from Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13: Climate Action, he partnered with like-minded friends to formally establish SACCA in Alabel, Sarangani Province.
Their first project, the SACCA Booth Camp, was launched as both an environmental education program and a platform to build networks, recruit members, and establish community-based organizations. They aspire to expand their advocacy beyond Sarangani in the future.
Since its inception, SACCA has consistently rolled out monthly activities and participated in youth-focused events such as ANGAT Gen Z, SarBay Heroes, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 12's Agos ng Buhay Camp. Through initiatives like SACCAugnayan, the organization has built a robust network of partners and collaborators, with Geolaga at the forefront of these connections.
However, building SACCA came with its challenges. Membership retention, securing funding, and doubts about Geolaga’s age and capabilities were hurdles he had to overcome. Yet, his determination remained firm.
"I wasn’t entirely prepared to start SACCA, but I did it anyway. Never doubt yourself," he advises.
"Obstacles are part of the journey. Keep moving forward, face failures, and eventually, you’ll succeed."
Geolaga acknowledges the limited interest of many youths in environmental advocacy, noting their inclination towards sports and public performances. While he respects such interests, he envisions a more diverse youth engagement that includes conservational action, which he insists is far from boring.
"Let's make the environment a key interest for the youth," he encourages.
To ensure SACCA's sustainability, Geolaga has initiated a complementary social enterprise called "Plant Plant." This startup produces tree seedlings and environmental products for local groups and government agencies, providing additional support for SACCA’s operations.
For now, Geolaga and his team remain focused on Alabel. SACCA aims to nurture a new generation of environmental advocates who can drive community action for environmental protection, conservation, and disaster preparedness. Though the journey is ongoing, Geolaga is committed to making the most of his time for the cause.
"The climate is changing—why aren’t we? Whether it’s a small act or a big effort, everyone can contribute to a healthier planet," he concludes.
