The Cultural Heritage Learning Center (CHLC) was inaugurated on Wednesday, December 18, at Sitio Green Valley in Nalus, Kiamba, Sarangani Province.
The center aims to preserve and promote the indigenous culture of the Tboli community while enhancing educational opportunities for its learners. The CHLC will also support the development of abaca crafts, as Sitio Valley is one of the major producers of abaca in Sarangani.
The initiative was spearheaded by LGU Kiamba through its Tourism Office, the Department of Education (DepEd) Sarangani, and Green Valley Integral School. Mayor George F. Falgui led the event and highlighted the importance of education in cultural preservation and empowerment.
In a Facebook post, he expressed his excitement for this project.
“I am immensely proud to witness the inauguration of the Cultural Heritage Learning Center (CHLC) at Barangay Nalus, Green Valley Integrated School in partnership with LGU Kiamba, Kiamba Tourism Office, and Sangguniang Bayan,” he stated.
“This remarkable facility represents a crucial step towards preserving and promoting the invaluable cultural heritage of our beloved Municipality of Kiamba. This center will serve as a vital hub for our community, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our traditions, arts, and history. By investing in our cultural identity, we empower our people, particularly our youth, to connect with their roots and contribute to a vibrant and thriving future for Kiamba.”
The center is set to be the first CHLC recognized by DepEd Sarangani and will be managed by the principal and teachers of Green Valley Integral School (GVIS).
The implementation of the CHLC in schools in Region 12 is supported by DepEd Region Memo No. 153, 2021, signed by RD Carlito D. Rocafort on August 9, 2021, coinciding with the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This DepEd regional memo supports schools implementing IP Education.
In the region, Landan National High School in Polomolok, South Cotabato, also has a CHLC for Blaan learners.
The event was also attended by staff from the Municipal Tourism Office, municipal and barangay officials, representatives from the Department of Agriculture Region 12, partners, and the community.
