Project Handurawan, a collaborative initiative led by the Committee on Education under SK Labangal and Maratabat: MSU-GSC Writers Guild, officially launched with an inspiring seminar titled “On Writing Local Children's Literature: The Crafting of Si Jalal Ago so Ranaw.”
Held on October 30, 2024, at the Alumni Pavilion, the event featured Atty. Hanna Usman, author of the children's story, who shared her journey and insights into writing children’s literature rooted in local culture.
Atty. Usman captivated attendees with her discussion on the craft of storytelling and the importance of embedding local themes, languages, and cultural experiences into literature to create a powerful resonance with young readers.
She emphasized the role of children’s literature in fostering pride, awareness, and understanding of one’s heritage. Her book, “Si Jalal Ago so Ranaw,” was highlighted as a prime example of how narrative, imagination, and cultural memory can be woven together to create meaningful stories for future generations.
"I want you, as early as now, gusto kong ma-realize ninyo na ang pagsusulat ay hindi nakakapagpayaman. On a realistic side, pagpapayaman lang siya ng soul mo. It will enrich your culture and your contribution to your culture,” Atty. Usman shared.
This seminar set a strong foundation for Project Handurawan, aiming to inspire storytellers and young writers to craft literature for children that resonates with their cultural identities.
Initially launched as Storya Ko Lang, the program has evolved into Project Handurawan, embracing its Cebuano concept, meaning “vision, memory, and imagination”—the essential ingredients of children’s literature.
As the inaugural event, this seminar marked an important step in Project Handurawan’s mission to nurture emerging talents dedicated to preserving cultural heritage through storytelling.
Running for six months, Project Handurawan remains committed to supporting local writers and storytellers in their quest to create literature that celebrates and sustains the unique heritage of the community for generations to come.
