A tribute to Ms. Nena Del Rosario-Villanueva at the Manila Pianos on Saturday afternoon, September 22, captured the hearts of the audience. Ms. Nena has been a notable figure in the Philippine music community since the 1950s, recognized for her contributions to promoting classical music and nurturing young talents. Over her music career, which spanned 60 years, she gave nearly 200 performances.
The event provided an intimate and elegant atmosphere, perfect for such a tribute. The audience appreciated the performances and the heartfelt homage to Ms. Nena, making the afternoon memorable.
Traveling all the way from General Santos City, one audience member and music enthusiast, Mr. Paolo Adrian Esmeña, said, “It is impossible not to feel anything when a pianist pours so much of themselves into a piece they have spent a lot of time mastering. Danica Antazo’s rendition of Ondine from Gaspard de la Nuit was passionate and moving. Pauline Aguila’s performance of Etude Tableaux Op. 33 numbers 7 to 9 displayed precision and technical proficiency. Ms. Elnora Halili’s special number was indeed special, highlighted by an arrangement of My Favorite Things, showcasing playfulness, freedom, and expertise.”
“The performance was a complete experience. It was all wrapped in a neat bow with Dr. Alegria Ferrer’s passionate and sentimental storytelling. The whole event felt like a hidden adventure. Discovering that such a world exists has been eye-opening, and I’m looking forward to attending more events like these,” he added.
Ms. Nena is well-known for her involvement with the Manila Pianos, where she supports musical events and performances showcasing both local and international artists. Through her dedication, she has helped foster a greater appreciation for the arts in the country.
Moreover, some audience also shared their experiences after the event. Ayrish, 70, said, “The event was a good watch party and well-hosted. It was worth attending for a senior citizen like me. I was given a chance to meet and watch Ms. Pauline Aguila perform.”
“The lecture on the life and musical achievements of Nena Del Rosario-Villanueva was very informative and gave honor and pride to our country. Additionally, the other pianists performed well, demonstrating their talents and mastery of their craft. Overall, the lecture recital was an enriching and relaxing event,” said 73-year-old Evelyn A. Baliton.
Pauline Aguila, one of the tribute performers, said, “The pieces that I performed are part of my repertoire for my upcoming solo graduation recital next year. This was a good avenue for me to present a part of my repertoire.”
As the tribute to Ms. Nena Del Rosario-Villanueva concluded, it was clear that her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians. The performances and shared memories not only celebrated her remarkable journey but also highlighted the vital role of community in nurturing the arts.
