The City Government of Tacurong, through its City Tourism Office, actively promotes the concept of "Muslim-friendly" food establishments. This initiative aims to cater to both the Muslim community and non-pork eaters in the city and neighboring towns.
While not all food establishments are officially "Halal certified," the city government supports them in obtaining certification in the future. Currently, 34 food establishments do not serve pork.
Senior Tourism Officer Emelie P. Jamorabon mentioned that this campaign builds upon a similar one previously conducted by the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 12. The momentum has led many local food businesses to participate.
To further enhance their services, upcoming trainings on food safety and sanitation, as well as the Filipino Brand of Service, are planned for the food sector in the city. Additionally, Jamorabon encourages these establishments to seek DOT accreditation to align with tourism standards.
The Tacurong City Tourism Office has introduced the "Talakudong Food Overload" campaign to promote and support local food establishments.
This initiative extends beyond Tacurong; the Sultan Kudarat province is also embracing the concept of Muslim-friendly establishments, to become a Halal center in the Soccsksargen region.
Halal, derived from Arabic, means "permissible or prescribed by Islam." However, it has also become a quality standard for non-Muslim consumers. Halal products are considered healthier because they exclude alcohol and any pork-related ingredients. The opposite term is haram, which signifies "forbidden.”
The Halal food market presents significant growth opportunities globally.
In 2023, the global Halal food market reached US$ 2,467.9 billion. The industry is booming due to factors such as the Muslim population, rising awareness, multiculturalism, globalization, and health concerns.
