Sultan Kudarat State University inaugurates the first 'Forensic Molecular Biology Center' in Mindanao

The Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) and the Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) opened the Forensic Molecular Biology Center (FMBC) on July 1, 2024, marking a groundbreaking facility in the Mindanao region.

Funded by the DOST-PCIEERD, the state-of-the-art facility will empower researchers with advanced tools for genome-based studies in various fields like forensic science, data analysis, and food processing.

Sammy P. Malawan, DOST regional director, stated that he expects the FMBC to boost SKSU's research output and offer comprehensive training and consulting services.

Meanwhile, SKSU's FMBC project leader, Dr. Vincent Louie D. Cabelin, highlighted the center's role in strengthening societal resilience during public health emergencies and disasters.

“We're very lucky to have PCIEERD as our partner because they provided us with around P4.96 billion in funding to procure all the equipment necessary for a basic forensic molecular biology laboratory or laboratory center,” Cabelin said.
