Call for Submissions: Sarangani Writers League’s Flash Fiction Contest

In celebration of ‘Buwan ng Wika’ next month, the Sarangani Writers League (SWL) invites writers with ties to Sarangani Province to submit flash fiction written in their local language!

The contest is part of the organization’s fulfillment of its vision of encouraging the creation, propagation, development, and appreciation of literature in Sarangani.

Aside from contests, the organization holds poetry and spoken word events, book-giving activities, storytelling sessions, and seminar-workshops, among others.

Submission

Although there are varying definitions of flash fiction and its types, this contest will only accept stories with 500 words or less. For a basic introduction to flash fiction, kindly visit this site. This contest does not have a theme, but works that violate ethical standards will automatically be rejected.

Each story must be written in any language spoken in Sarangani, except for Filipino/Tagalog and English. However, it must be accompanied by a translation in English and Filipino/Tagalog. The word count only applies to the piece in the original language and excludes the title.

Writers who wish to join must be born, residing/working/studying, or have resided/worked/studied in any of the seven municipalities of Sarangani Province. The authorship of the works may be sole or collaborative, but all collaborators should have ties to Sarangani.

Writers may submit at most two flash fiction pieces to saranganiwritersleague@gmail.com with the subject “SWL Flash Fiction Contest 2024.” The submission may be written in the body of the email or as an attachment. It should also contain the writer’s name, short bio note, profile picture, and mobile number. The last day for submissions is 30 August 2024.

Judging

A panel of judges will determine the winning pieces. They will select at most three pieces who will be deemed the winners and at most five pieces as the runners-up.

The writers of the winning pieces will receive ₱1,000.00, a certificate, and a set of books. Meanwhile, runners-up will receive ₱500.00, a certificate, and a set of books. The works of the winners and runners-up will also be considered for publication by the Sarangani Writers League.

For questions and clarifications, send a message to the organization’s email address or their page on Facebook.
