In its 2nd edition, the Municipality of Tampakan once again showcased their longest grilled chicken dapla style in SOX, dubbed “Dapla Tampakan 2024,” on Friday, June 21.

Twenty-five contingents from farmers’ associations, local chicken producers, and civic organizations in the municipality participated in grilling over 1,000 chickens. The activity was held along the 200-meter stretch of Pines Avenue.

Tampakan Mayor Leonard “Junjun” T. Escobillo graced the event to show support and highlighted the growing poultry industry of the town. Tampakan is considered as one of the biggest producers of poultry in the province of South Cotabato. This event was a testament to their dedication to supporting local producers.

“For a long time, we have looked for something that signifies Tampakan. With this event, people will associate chicken dapla with Tampakan,” said Mayor Escobillo.

Tampakan will collaborate with government agencies like DOST and DOT for product development and tourism marketing and promotion. DOT 12 Regional Director Nelia Arina assured the agency’s support for their tourism-related initiatives.

“Dapla” means to lie face down with arms and legs extended. It involves splitting a whole chicken (or pig, goat, or cow) in half and roasting it spread-eagled between steel or bamboo poles, or on a grill. Unlike traditional lechon, all sides are roasted, making it crispier, tastier, and less greasy.

From the 25 contingents, the ‘I Love Tampakan Lambayong Twin Hills United Farmers’ was declared the winner of the Best Tasting Chicken Dapla.

Another achievement for Tampakan is breaking the world record with a mass pedicure event.

The town claimed the Guinness World Record for “Most Pedicures Given in 8 Hours” from Toronto, Canada. They recorded 1,223 pedicures, surpassing Toronto’s 2015 record of 1,083.

The Municipality of Tampakan has a government-led school that offers Beauty Care Services. The event showcased their scholars and their skills in beauty care services. It was held on June 15, at their municipal covered court.

Both events were part of the celebration of Tampakan’s 55th Founding Anniversary and the 21st Lumalay Festival, which ran from June 15-21, 2024.

“Lumalay” is an acronym for “Lubi, Mais, Palay” (coconut, corn, rice). These three crops are major agricultural products of the town.
