The Sarangani Writers League (SWL), in partnership with Tridax Zines, and Maratabat: MSU-GenSan Writers Guild, is proud to present the SOX Writers Workshop (SWW). This enriching event will take place from November 24-27, 2023, at the CCT Malungon Retreat and Training Center in Malungon, Sarangani Province.
Formerly known as the SOX Summer Writing Camp, last held at MSU GenSan in 2019, the workshop is designed to nurture the burgeoning literary scene in southern Mindanao. It seeks to foster and promote emerging writers in the region, inspiring them to create literary works that encapsulate and celebrate the diverse cultures of the SOCCSKSARGEN (SOX) region.
Eighteen budding writers from across Region XII have been selected to participate in this workshop. They have already submitted their manuscripts, which include short fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry. These works will be the focus of the workshop discussions, with panelists providing constructive critiques to enhance the pieces.
"This marks the first regional literary event where the Sarangani Writers League takes the lead as the host organizer. It's a privilege to steer the rejuvenated SWW following a significant hiatus. We view SWW 2023 as a monumental stride towards enhancing the abilities of our budding writers,” said SWL Chairperson Carlou Barroca Espedillon.
“Alongside our partners, we're also striving to position SWW as a respected literary institution that offers our writers the opportunity to learn and engage with the broader literary community,” he added.
“Overall, SWW 2023 is a testament to the strength of the literary scene in Region 12 and the value we place on our regional literature. SOX (region) has great stories to tell, and our writers from SOX are ready to tell them,” said Prof. Rossel Audencial-Mangaron, one of the advisers of Maratabat.
“On behalf of Tridax Zines, and as a writer, gina suportahan namin ang mga ganitong aktibidad kay isa itong cultural work, isang itong trabaho para mapabuti ang buhay gamit ang mga salita na magtubo sa ating mga kaluluwa at puso,” said Gerald Castillo Galindez, co-founder of Tridax Zine.
(“On behalf of Tridax Zines, and as a writer, we support these kinds of activities because this is a cultural work, a work to improve life using words that grow in our souls and hearts.”)
The SWW is honored to have plenary speakers such as Gutierrez “Teng” Mangansakan II, Eric Gerard Nebran, and Estrella Golingay, Ph.D. Writing mentors include Michael John Otanes (short fiction), Gerald Castillo Galindez (poetry), and Jennie Arado (creative nonfiction).
The event is also endorsed and supported by Aklat Alamid and the National Book Development Board (NBDB).
