‘Guinakit sa Sugoda Malapatan’ showcases at the 18th Pakaradyan Festival

Malapatan, Sarangani Province - The Guinakit sa Sugoda Malapatan fluvial parade dazzled the spectators at the 18th Pakaradyan Festival and 54th Founding Anniversary of the town on Tuesday, June 20.

The Guinakit sa Sugoda Malapatan fluvial parade commemorates the arrival of Moro leaders in Malapatan. Six coastal barangays - Sapu Masla, Sapu Padidu, Poblacion, Tuyan, Lun Masla, and Lun Padidu—participated in the parade, showcasing their beautifully designed boats. Mayor Salway "Jun" Sumbo Jr. welcomed the boats at the Poblacion port.

The "Guinakit sa Sugoda" is a highly anticipated event at the Pakaradyan Festival. It is a unique tradition practiced only in the Municipality of Malapatan among the seven municipalities in Sarangani. The parade aims to raise awareness of the beautiful traditions of the Maguindanaons living in the municipality.

The guinakit, also spelled ginakit, is a traditional Moro boat used by royalty. Historically, it was used to navigate the coastal and inland waters of Mindanao. The word "guinakit" comes from the Maguindanaon word and means "convoy of boats."

The event was also attended by Vice Mayor Jean Delos Santos, First Lady Flordeliza Sumbo, Municipal Councilors Eleonor Suib, Diana Jade Tatad-Sambaga, Al-omer Suib, Malapatan Chief of Police PMAJ Rolan Catuboran, Barangay Officials, Muslim Leaders, Municipal Employees, and members of the Moro community.
