PRO XII’s film festival features young filmmakers in Region 12

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (March 27, 2023) – To showcase the youth’s talents and skills in filmmaking, the Police Regional Office (PRO) 12 has held for the first time a film festival which officially culminated on March 24 at SM Mall of Gensan.

It was participated in by private and state colleges, different junior and senior high schools, and out-of-school youths from various provinces and cities in Region XII.

PRO 12 Regional Director PBGEN Jimili Macaraeg, who sparked the idea of doing a film festival, said the PRO 12 aims to “involve the younger generation in addressing anti-criminality and peace and order issues in the community.”

He said the film festival will not only raise awareness among the youth but will “also serve as an avenue for them to maximize their potentials and exposure to community for them to be a good and responsible citizen.”

On March 24, PRO 12 held its film showing at The Word for Everyone Ministries Church featuring eight short film entries, five of which from the in-school youth category, while three are from the out-of-school youth category.

The short film entry “Panata ng Isang Makabayan” of Alabel National High School and Sarangani Police Provincial Office was among the finalists in the awards night on Friday.

In the synopsis, “Panata ng Isang Makabayan” tells the story of “a young man in a peaceful community living a simple life, but everything changed when the notorious group called Banayaw wreak havoc in the community that he lives. It was in that moment that his heart for patriotism was set ablaze which made him set his eyes towards becoming a policeman in order to bring justice to the victims of the atrocities committed by the terrorists.”

Among the five entries for the in-school youth category, “Ka Lima” from Sultan Kudarat won several awards including the Best Film, Best Story, Best in Sound Design, Best Direction, Best in Editing, Best in Acting Ensemble, and Best in Cinematography.

For the out-of-school youth, Zone 3 Boys from Cotabato Province also won Best Film, Best in Acting Ensemble, Best in Cinematography, Best Direction, Best in Editing, and Best in Sound Design.

PLTCOL Ma. Joyce Birrey, public information officer of PRO 12, said the short film entries tackled “the relevant issues na nangyayari sa community natin, most especially on drugs, terrorism, and end local communist armed conflict in our region.”

It featured fictional and real-life stories from the community, highlighting the PNP KASIMBAYANAN Program and the Peace and Security Campaign Plan M+K+K=K or Malasakit, Kaayusan, Kapayapaan = Kaunlaran “thereby fostering bond between the community and the police.”

According to RD Macaraeg, the Philippine National Police continues “to come up with ways to mobilize the community especially the youth and keep them from the harmful effects of illegal drugs and other threats they may face.” (Jori Mae R.
