DENR, PAMB hold 2nd Science Research Colloquium

General Santos City – Various student-researchers from the academe have showcased their studies related to the protection and conservation of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS) during the second Science Research Colloquium spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 12 and Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) of SBPS in General Santos City on Friday (March 10).

Atty. Felix S. Alicer, DENR-12 regional executive director (RED) and the concurrent chair of PAMB-SBPS, said the research forum highlights and recognizes the relevant studies conducted within SBPS including the mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reefs, flora and fauna, oceanography, and innovations.

“These studies may assist the DENR and PAMB in policy formulation for further protection and conservation of the Sarangani Bay which is in line with the policy direction of DENR Secretary Antonia Loyzaga that all policies implemented or supported by the department are science-based,” he said.

A total of 18 studies of student-researchers from Mindanao State University-Gensan Campus, Notre Dame of Dadiangas University, Sultan Kudarat State University, Ramon Magsaysay Memorial College, and Ireneo Santiago National High School were presented in the research colloquium and evaluated by DENR-12 Conservation and Development Division Chief Dr. Ali M. Hadjinasser, Glan CENR Officer Dr. Rosalinda B. Cortez, and NEDA-12 representative Judd Nichol Leonar.

SBPS Protected Area Superintendent Joy C. Ologuin said the students have published the said studies as part of their school requirements but quite unknown to the public. “We have started the conduct of this Science Research Colloquium last year to make their studies known to the public and increase the level of awareness on key biodiversity of SBPS,” she said.

DENR Sarangani PENR Officer Maria Elvira V. Lumayag said that they have already utilized some of these studies in the implementation their programs and projects. She also thanked the student-researchers and their advisers for being partners of the DENR in science-based biodiversity protection and conservation. (RSCIGM/DENR 12 FB page)
