1st Kalilangan Brewdown Competition conducts in GenSan

 

As part of the celebration of Kalilangan Festival 2023, the Local Government Unit of General Santos, through the City Economic Management and Cooperative Development Office (CEMCDO) conducted the first Kalilangan Brewdown Competition held on February 22, 2023, at Veranza Mall GenSan.

The event aimed to support GenSan’s growing coffee industry. Twelve (12) participants showcased their barista skills through their brewing technique using the pour-over method.

The pour-over method involves pouring hot water through coffee grounds in a filter. The water drains through the coffee and filter into a carafe, server, or mug. Many of the world's best brewers hail the pour-over method as superior because of the intimate control you have created the best cup of coffee.

"The event wants to raise awareness of the growing interest in our local coffee industry. We are thankful that our local government is helping us on our mission to advocate for this industry," GenSan Coffee Association President John Paul Velayo said.

"We hope to expand the coffee community to be more diverse and inclusive. We are open to collaborations at our upcoming events. We are also passionate about sharing our knowledge on coffee," he said.

The winner of the Brewdown competition was Jericho De Guzman (Balai Kape); while Devine Lendio (Sidenotes Café) took first place and TJ Heiro Santos (Brewbuds Café) took second.

Certified Q Graders from the region were the coffee juries of the said competition, namely Q Cupper Denis Cocoba, Q Robusta Grader Dave Fredeluces, and Q Arabica Grader Kenneth Clint Bajade.

The Kalilangan Brewdown Competition 2023 was also in collaboration with DTI GenSan, GenSan Coffee Association, The Coffee Academy GenSan, Tay Roming Coffee Roasters, Sidenotes Café, Goodblends Café, Kofiness, and Lirionora. (Genory Vanz Alfasain, contributor)
